Earlier in the series, he wrote about [the trouble he ran into buying concert tickets online](https://blog.usablenet.com/screen-reader-accessibility-event-ticket-troubles). When I go to an event, the technology does not stop at the ticket website anymore. More and more, I have to use a company's digital offerings at the venue itself, and that is where some overlooked accessibility gaps show up for me as a screen reader user. In this post, I will walk through three of them: digital tickets, in-event materials, and in-event requests. ### Digital Tickets Digital tickets are the future. Paper tickets have essentially gone the way of the dodo, replaced by QR codes that can be scanned for quick entry. While this system sounds great in theory, in my experience, the accessibility side often gets forgotten. Most digital tickets I have received are either emailed a few days before the event or downloaded at the time of purchase. My biggest frustration is getting to the information on the ticket itself. In many cases, the tickets come as image-based PDF files that aren't accessible, so my screen reader can't read some or all of the details. That causes problems in a couple of ways. Bringing up the ticket quickly on my phone for entry can be very difficult if I have to activate some sort of interactive element before the ticket can be scanned. I also need to check details on the ticket once I am inside, like the row and seat number, when I am trying to find my seat. Tasks like these become impossible when my screen reader cannot speak the text on the ticket. ### In-Event Materials This is less common, but it is definitely on the rise. Some events include supporting materials, like a program handed out at a classical music concert. These have traditionally been printed on paper, but digitally progressive companies are switching to electronic versions. I recently attended a local jazz concert that had a QR code on the back of every seat. When I scanned it, it took attendees to a digital concert program. However, the fun ended there. The program was not accessible, and everything on the screen was labeled simply as "Image." I suspect the program was digitized by taking images or scans of the paper version, since hard copies were still available at the theater doors. If that is what happened, it left my screen reader with no text to read. It is a prime example of the adage that digital does not always mean accessible. As electronic event materials keep gaining traction, it is super important to me that they get made in a way that includes everyone's needs. ### In-Event Requests This one pertains to mobile apps. Many venues now let patrons use a mobile app to make in-event requests, such as ordering food or refreshments. I recently attended a baseball game where we ordered food delivered directly to our seats through in-stadium ordering. These features are great in concept, but in my experience they are often not so great for accessibility. At that game, the most frustrating problem was that I had to select my section and seat for delivery by indicating it on a dynamic map graphic. The map was not accessible at all, so I needed to ask my sighted partner for assistance. The other issue was order progress updates. They appeared in the center of the screen as a scrolling banner-style notification, but my screen reader never spoke them aloud. ### Common questions about event accessibility for screen reader users **Can a screen reader read a digital event ticket?** Not when the ticket is an image-based PDF. In that case, my screen reader cannot speak some or all of the details, including the row and seat number I need once I am inside. I have run into the same thing on [mobile event ticket websites](https://blog.usablenet.com/navigating-accessibility-challenges-on-mobile-event-ticket-websites). **What happens when a digital event program is made from scans of a printed one?** For me, everything on the screen was spoken as "Image." My guess is the program was made from scans of the paper version, so my screen reader had no text to read. **Can blind users order food through a stadium or venue app?** I could not do it on my own. Picking my seat meant pointing to it on a map graphic my screen reader could not use, and the order updates in the scrolling banner were never spoken. ### Where That Leaves Me Digital in-event features are only as powerful as their accessibility. Based on what I have run into, accessibility in this space is unfortunately not quite there yet. However, I'm confident this will change over time through awareness and accessibility remediation.
